Since 2013 we have been proud to partner with Exelon, America's leading competitive energy provider. Headquartered right here in Chicago, the people at this incredible company share our vision for helping local neighborhoods thrive and live that out through their business model and philanthropic efforts.
Sparking New Futures: Three Full-Home Sponsorships
The company's generous monetary donation is matched by their volunteer support to see these homes physically realized. In fact, members of Exelon were present at the home dedications for the Marshbanks, Sampsons and Whites where they personally handed over the keys to the homeowners, a moment of pride and joy for all parties.
Investing in Education: A Bright Idea
A stable home environment and quality education are significant contributors in building a healthy life. Education is a priority for both Habitat Chicago and Exelon, which has led to one of our more innovative partnerships. Through the Opt4STEM Energy Academy, high school students are immersed in the field of energy through a nine-day summer program where they meet and work alongside energy professionals. During this program, students practice designing energy efficient homes and tour build sites. We are grateful for Exelon's investment in STEM education, which we hope will provide bright futures for all participants.
Women Build: It’s Electric
Exelon has sponsored our Women Build event for the past two years. These annual event sponsorships allowed us to keep costs low and focus on construction for two women-led families seeking safe, affordable housing. Because women can sometimes face bigger hurdles in obtaining and maintaining decent housing compared to men, it is vital that Habitat Chicago has partners who understand the obstacles and recognize what is at stake. Sharing this concern, Exelon brought out members of their "Women in Nuclear Group" to lend a hand by swinging a hammer. Everyone had a great time and it only reinforced why having the right partnerships is crucial to our mission's success.
Constellation: A Burst of New Energy
We are also thrilled to receive grants totaling over $100,000 from Constellation NewEnergy, Inc., an Exelon Company. Working with our partners at Elevate Energy, we have used this funding to repair homes in West Pullman, provide energy efficiency education and distribute weatherization kits to over 1,000 residents.
$400,000+ invested into Habitat work in West Pullman
Three full-home sponsorships in three years
500+ volunteer hours invested in 2017 alone
Energizing the Neighborhood: The Big Picture
Like us, Exelon cares about the West Pullman community as a whole and they have demonstrated time and again their dedication to its residents.
Exelon City Solar is the largest urban solar power plant in the United States and is located near the Exelon-sponsored Habitat homes in West Pullman; it generates enough clean, reliable electricity to power up to 1,500 homes per year. During its construction, the plant created 200 jobs and sourced much of its labor and materials from local companies on Chicago's South Side.
Now, it continues to provide permanent work in the areas of operations, maintenance and security. Additionally, Exelon City Solar expands the local tax base by leasing the long-vacant brownfield property from the City of Chicago, which generates revenue from rent and real estate taxes.
The Exelon Perspective
“What we’ve done on this block is build community. It takes all of us to build a community.” – Steve Solomon, Exelon Foundation President
