HABITAT HOSTS

If you are invested in our mission, energized through interactions with others and comfortable speaking to a crowd, consider becoming a Habitat Chicago Host. In this role, you become the face for the organization and help host large volunteer groups on the build site and represent us at local events like volunteer fairs, Campus Chapter meetings and new volunteer orientations. 


The Role 

Using their own personal excitement for the work of Habitat Chicago, Habitat Chicago Hosts inspire others to get involved and keep coming back for more.


Details are provided before each build day or event, but here are examples of what to expect: 

 

On the Build Site: 

  • Get volunteers excited for their build day

  • Help volunteers sign in and get name tags

  • Introduce volunteers to the Construction Crew Leaders

  • Assist Construction Crew Leaders with set up for the day

  • Advocate for safety precautions

  • Be an ambassador for Habitat Chicago

  • Take pictures of volunteers hard at work 

  • Organize the mini-mobile unit (where materials and tools are kept)

  • Help set up for lunch

  • Assist with clean up at the end of the day


Special Events 

  • Give introductory presentations to audiences of all kinds, whether at Campus Chapters or New Volunteer Orientations 

  • Attend volunteer fairs, where you’ll share your knowledge and passion for the mission of Habitat Chicago

You’ll Make a Perfect Habitat Chicago Host if You: 

  • Are a life-long learner and want to deepen your knowledge of affordable housing in Chicago

  • Thrive when working with a diverse group of people

  • Have experience working as a member of a team or with volunteers 

  • Have excellent verbal communication and critical-thinking skills

  • Are able to be on your feet for extended periods of time, occasionally on uneven terrain 

  • Exemplify Habitat Chicago’s core values: Trust, Commitment, Engagement, Innovation, Curiosity, and Achievement 

 

Time Commitment 

  • Approximately 10-15 hours per month, hosting 1-2 events each month

  • Events range from 2-8 hours and will come with approximately one hour of prep-work

  • Attendance at required trainings and quarterly meet ups

  • Monthly conference calls with fellow Habitat Chicago Hosts and the Volunteer Programs Manager

  • All Habitat Hosts are asked to make a 12-month commitment

 

Required Training 

  • Attend a New Volunteer Orientation

  • Attend a two-hour Habitat Chicago Host training 

  • Shadow a Habitat staff member on the build site 

  • Shadow a Habitat staff member at a special event
