To Nakeisha, Habitat Chicago is an opportunity both provide herself the stability and self-reliance she deserves and to help build and join a thriving community as well. In addition, she loves the fact that she is able to learn the construction skills that will help her maintain her home for years to come.
The amount of work that comes with homeownership is a little daunting to think about, but this Chicago native is ready and determined to build a place to call her own. Not only is she excited to bring her own style when it comes down to decorating the interior, she is looking forward to creating a space where her kids and grandkids can come together. Following in her grandmother’s footsteps, she wants to pass this house on to her kids and grandkids and leave her own legacy.
“I will have stability and a place that I know is mine. Everything is well put together and not torn down or falling apart around me, which are some of the things I am dealing with now... I am excited to be the first owner of something not owned by someone else; to be able to tell people this was built from the ground up. I feel like it was built for me, and I am excited to see it all come to life.”
