Habitat for Humanity Chicago, Astound Broadband holds build day in the West Pullman neighborhood for Home is the Key campaign

CHICAGO – May 2, 2024 – Habitat for Humanity Chicago is addressing the need for affordable, equitable housing in Chicago as part of Home is the Key, Habitat for Humanity International’s annual cause marketing campaign. Initiated in 2017, Habitat’s Home is the Key campaign occurs each April during National Fair Housing Month to highlight the critical need for affordable housing and building inclusive communities across the U.S.

On April 26, Habitat Chicago worked alongside volunteers from one of this year’s national campaign sponsors, Astound Broadband. Nearly 30 Astound volunteers gathered on two, single-family-home build sites in the West Pullman neighborhood to prep and paint interior walls, install outdoor fencing, and begin framing a newer home build.

“It means a great deal to Astound and our employee volunteers to work alongside Habitat for Humanity Chicago to help build new homes, lending a hand all for the good of something bigger than us. Our collaboration with Habitat Chicago continues Astound’s longtime commitment to the communities we serve. We look forward to the completion of the new homes and to our continued partnership to bring more affordable housing to the Chicago area,” said Tom McKay, SVP/General Manager of Astound Broadband.

The eighth annual public campaign ran from April 1 – 30, 2024, but people can support Home is the Key year-round by donating online and by purchasing select products that send a portion of the proceeds back to Habitat. Habitat encourages using #HomeIsTheKey on social media and visiting habitat.org/homeisthekey to learn more.

Beyond the Home is the Key campaign, Habitat Chicago is committed to investing $42 million directly into our focus neighborhoods over the next five years and centers our programmatic efforts around four strategic priorities: strengthening the neighborhood housing market, connecting the community, elevating the neighborhood appeal, and enhancing the physical environment.

“We believe a home is the key to a more stable and secure future, and our planned growth in neighborhood investment and programmatic delivery will allow us to more directly address racial equity and neighborhood disinvestment here in Chicago,” Executive Director Jennifer Parks stated. “This focus allows for thousands of Chicago residents a clear way to realize the Habitat vision—one where everyone has a decent place to live.”
