Are there projects you and your neighbors could work on together to make your block look and feel even better? We’re guessing the answer is yes, and that’s good news because now West Pullman and Greater Grand Crossing residents have even more resources at their fingertips.

If it’s time to bring your ideas to life, consider applying for a Neighbors United Block Improvement grant from Habitat Chicago.

We want you to be proud of the area you live in and we are offering you the chance to make improvements that your entire block can enjoy. You dream up the idea, recruit your neighbors, and we'll fund it.

Your improvement proposal can be simple and straight-forward, or creative and out-of-the-box. A few past project ideas include landscaping, window boxes, attractive block signs, house flags, power-washing, repairing fences or porches, painting, or lighting. We think it’s important that projects enhance the look of your block but even more importantly, that you and your neighbors get to connect and envision your block’s future while carrying out your project. So, we're leaving the ideas up to you! After all, you know your neighborhood best.

We provide up to $1,000 per project, and require that all ideas involve approximately eight households of residents within blocks in the West Pullman or Greater Grand Crossing neighborhoods.

From concept to completion, we want these grants to not only make your life better, but bring neighbors together. When residents get to know each other, and look out for one another, long-term community is built.

Habitat Chicago will select three to seven blocks for funding in each project period on a first come basis for applicants who meet the application criteria. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis in advance of the project period:

  • Spring (April - May)

  • Summer (June - August)

  • Fall (September – November)

  • Your block must submit a complete application.

  • Your block must be in the West Pullman or Greater Grand Crossing neighborhoods.

  • Your project(s) must engage approximately eight households.

  • Your project(s) must have a planned completion date within the project period.

  • Your block must be willing to place temporary yard signs on the corners of your blocks for at least four weeks after the project completion indicating your block was a participant in the Neighbors United Initiative.

  • Project(s) with the largest numbers of residents/households participating

  • Project(s) that will show the most visual impact

  • Applications that demonstrate resource use and project planning for on-time and on-budget completion

If your block is not chosen in one project period, it is possible it will be selected for the next one and we will work with you to improve your chance of selection.
