Our hiring philosophy

When we hire, we look for more than resumés and experience—we seek people who are passionate about equity, collaboration, and making an impact in Chicago neighborhoods. We seek employees who align with our core vales:

  • Mission-Driven: Every role, whether at the build sites, the office, or the ReStore, directly contributes to advancing safe, affordable housing in our city.

  • Equity and Inclusion: We are committed to building a diverse workforce that reflects the communities we serve. We value a wide range of perspectives and experiences, and we strive to create a welcoming and supportive environment for all.

  • Growth and Development: We believe that people thrive when given the opportunity to learn and grow. We look for candidates who are eager to develop their skills, expand their impact, and grow with us over time.

  • Collaboration and Respect: Habitat’s work is built on partnerships, with volunteers, donors, and one another. We seek individuals who are team-oriented, respectful, and ready to roll up their sleeves alongside others.

How to apply

Apply online by submitting your resumé and any additional requested materials (such as a cover letter or portfolio). Cover letters help us learn a little bit more about you. Be sure to highlight how your background connects to our mission and the specific role.

We want candidates to feel informed, respected, and supported throughout the hiring process. While the exact steps may vary by position, here’s what you can generally expect:

  1. Application review - Our hiring team evaluates applications to identify candidates whose skills and experiences align with the role and our mission. Due to the high volume of candidates, the HR team is often unable to follow up individually with all applicants.

  2. Initial interview - Selected candidates are invited to a phone screen with a member of our team. This stage helps us learn more about your background and gives you a chance to ask questions about Habitat Chicago.

  3. In-person interview - Candidates advancing in the process will meet with several members of our team. These conversations explore both technical skills and values alignment since collaboration and mission fit are central to our work.

  4. References and final steps - Before making an offer, we reach out to references to learn more about your past experiences and strengths.

  5. Offer - If selected, you’ll receive an offer to join our team. We’ll provide details about next steps, onboarding, and welcoming you into the Habitat Chicago team.

  • We strive to communicate promptly and clearly at every stage.

  • We treat every applicant with fairness and respect.

  • We recognize the time and energy you invest in applying, and we aim to make the process as transparent as possible.
